Issue #3: Did Somebody Say Fellowships?

Catch up on the latest additions to the AI & Environment Resource Hub.

Brief Author Note

Welcome to the 3rd issue of The Climate Code! One minor addition that I made to the newsletter is fellowship opportunities in the AI and Environment space.

It is not going to be a comprehensive list of everything that is out there, rather the top 3 opportunities just like all the other categories.

I personally try to apply for these when I can since the AI field as a whole is blossoming with fellowships and sources of funding for independent researchers. 🌸

Have fun and good luck if you decide to apply! ❤️

Nate

Podcast Episodes 🎧️

The Hidden Environmental Costs of a Single AI Prompt (AI & Environment): You may have heard that AI is a bit of a resource hog. It requires so much electricity that scaling it could have a tremendous impact on the planet through the increase of emissions. So, what is the exact footprint you’ll leave the next time you type a prompt into your AI model of your choice? Dr. Sasha Luccioni, Climate Lead at the global AI firm Hugging Face, joins Pioneers of AI to break down each step in fascinating detail.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and It's Implications for Electricity Systems (AI & Energy): In this latest OIES podcast from the Electricity Programme, Dimitra Apostolopoulou talks to Senior Research Fellow David Robinson and Independent Researcher Plutarco Naranjo about the Oxford Energy Forum (OEF) issue titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Its Implications for Electricity Systems”.

How AI and Satellite Data Revolutionize Forest Conservation with Diego Saez Gil (AI & Ecology/Biodiversity): Diego Saez Gil, the Founder and CEO of Pachama, joins us to explore how AI and satellite technology are revolutionizing forest conservation and carbon credit verification. Diego shares insights on partnering with tech giants, working with indigenous communities, and leveraging AI to protect nature.

Scientific Papers 📄

Environmental Law’s Principles Applied to Artificial Intelligence: A Path Towards Regulation (AI & Policy): This paper argues that environmental law principles, such as precaution, accountability, and public participation, should guide the regulation of AI’s environmental impacts, highlighting gaps in the EU AI Act and calling for stronger sustainability-focused governance.

Enhancing Urban Sustainability: The Role of AI-Driven Transportation Systems in Reducing Carbon Footprints (AI & Social/Economic Impacts): This study shows that AI-driven transportation systems can significantly reduce urban carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency by optimizing routes, easing congestion, and enhancing public transit, while offering policy guidance for sustainable implementation.

The Energy Cost of Reasoning: Analyzing Energy Usage in LLMs with Test-Time Compute (AI & Data Centers/Hardware): Allocating compute dynamically during inference, known as test-time compute (TTC) can outperform traditional model scaling by improving accuracy and energy efficiency, especially on complex reasoning tasks, offering a more sustainable path for deploying large language models.

Policy Documents 🏛️

Artificial Power 2025 Landscape Report (AI Policy & Governance): This report argues that accepting Big Tech’s vision for AI as inevitable risks deepening inequality and eroding democratic control, so we make the case for rejecting that path and instead advancing a just, transparent, and equitable technological future.

State of European Data Centers 2025 (AI & Infrastructure): This report reveals how €100 billion in investments are reshaping Europe’s data centre landscape, advancing AI, boosting digital sovereignty, and expanding from FLAP-D hubs to fast-growing Nordic and Southern regions.

Hamburg Declaration on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (AI & Sustainability): This report calls for a globally coordinated effort to harness AI responsibly and inclusively to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing the need for equitable access, human rights protections, and environmental sustainability amid growing risks and global disparities.

Multimedia 🎥

We Went to the Town Elon Musk Is Poisoning (AI & Environmental Impact): Elon Musk’s massive xAI data center is poisoning Memphis. It's burning enough gas to power a small city, with no permits and no pollution controls. Residents tell us they can’t breathe and they’re getting sicker.

How Can Climate Tech AI and Marketing Drive Real Measurable Change (AI & Climate Policy): I'm pleased to share our insightful conversation with Duygu Ozen, focusing on the hurdles climate tech startups face and how a conscious marketing approach can support their commercialisation. We delve into the challenges of accessing finance and the importance of connecting startups with clients.

The Hidden Cost of AI: How Much Power is ChatGPT Really Using? (AI & Energy): As Lionel built more interactive AI systems, he started asking a different kind of question. A big one. The kind of question that keeps engineers, artists, and policy makers awake at night. What the hell is all this costing us? The AI Energy Crisis Nobody Wants to Talk About.

Organizations 🌎️

MOBY Robotics (AI & Ocean Science): MOBY Robotics is on a mission to provide the world with a clean, scalable, and ethical source of critical minerals. Our fully electric, autonomous, and patent-protected underwater vehicles harvest polymetallic nodules from the ocean floor using precision robotics, AI, and computer vision.

Rhea’s Factory (AI & Circular Economy): At Rhea’s Factory, we are reimagining the end of life of plastics and converting plastic waste into value-added products. We develop high performing enzyme blends that degrade plastics utilizing our proprietary combination of cutting-edge machine learning algorithms and biochemical processes.

Atomic Canyon (AI & Energy): AI powers the future at Atomic Canyon. Our advanced AI platform modernizes solutions across the nuclear energy sector, starting with Neutron, our custom-built AI search platform for the nuclear energy sector. Neutron works to simplify pages of documentation, enhance Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) data access and unlock workflow efficiency.

Tools 🛠️

Jeo (AI & Geospatial Analysis): Jeo, Jax for Earth Observation, geospatial model training for Earth Observation with Jax / Flax from Google Deepmind.

Nonprofit AI Resources (AI & Workforce Development): Part of the Nonprofit AI book that is available, these resources are perfect for any non-profit stakeholder that is trying to learn more about and use AI in their workflows.

GAIA Foundation Model (AI & Climate & Extreme Weather): s. GAIA represents a new class of geospatial AI models with the potential to create significant impact across sectors from more accurate weather forecasting to applications in insurance, power utilities, aviation, and agriculture.

Fellowships Corner 💵

NBB Research Fellowship Programme (Belgium): For PhDs and postdocs in economics, data science, or sustainability-related policy (they have a climate change track and the topics are awesome!) 🗓️ Deadline: September 15, 2025.

Imperial College Research Fellowship (UK): For researchers within 4 years of finishing their PhD, open to all nationalities. (focus areas include AI in science, extreme weather, and cleantech). 🗓️ Deadline: August 18, 2025.
