Issue #5: Weird Time Zones and Newsletters!
Catch up on the latest additions to the AI & Environment Resource Hub.

Brief Author Note
How are we in July almost already? The weeks are flying by over here in Cambodia as I have more client calls at 8pm at night.
Time zones are a tricky thing with me being in Cambodia. Ironically, calls are better for timing with clients in Europe compared to the US.
It is always extremes with the calls: either 8AM or 8PM, no in-between! Anyway, hope you are doing well with these crazy world events that are happening.
Stay safe and sane, go touch grass every once in a while.
Chau,
Nate
Quick Links!
The Future of Insurance with Climate Risk (AI & Social/Economic Impacts): The interview discusses the future of the insurance industry, focusing on demographic changes and the role of technology, particularly AI, in shaping this future. Overall, the interview provides a forward-looking analysis of the insurance industry, urging stakeholders to consider demographic trends and technological advancements in their strategic planning.
Geothermal: So Hot Right Now (AI & Energy): Geothermal energy, a long-standing but underutilized clean power source, is being revitalized by oil and gas drilling technologies to enable scalable, low-impact energy production that also offers workforce transition opportunities though regulatory hurdles remain a major barrier to wider adoption.
AI's Thirst for Intelligence (AI & Energy): Artificial intelligence is an electricity hog. Google says its total greenhouse gas emissions climbed nearly 50% over five years, mostly due to electricity that powers AI data centers.
MammAlps: A Multi-View Video Behavior Monitoring Dataset of Wild Mammals in the Swiss Alps (AI & Ecology/Biodiversity): MammAlps is a multimodal, multi-view wildlife monitoring dataset from the Swiss Alps that supports new benchmarks in animal behavior recognition and ecological event analysis, aiming to advance machine learning applications in ecology through rich video, audio, and segmentation data.
SOLID-MAP: Development of a Materials Acceleration Platform for High-Entropy Alloys (AI & Manufacturing): This paper presents SOLID-MAP, an AI-driven material acceleration platform that integrates active learning, thermodynamic modeling, and high-throughput experimentation to rapidly discover and evaluate high-entropy alloys for energy-relevant applications.
Regional Climate Risk Assessment From Climate Models Using Probabilistic Machine Learning (AI & Climate Science): This paper introduces GenFocal, a scalable generative AI framework that enhances regional climate risk assessments by modeling complex, high-resolution climate hazards like tropical cyclones and extreme heat with greater accuracy and probabilistic precision than existing downscaling methods.
Global Trends in AI Governance: Evolving Country Approaches (AI Policy & Governance): This report explores the emerging landscape of AI governance, providing policymakers with an overview of key considerations, challenges, and global approaches to regulating and governing AI.
Towards Environmental Sustainability of GenAI: A Strategy Framework Across the Lifecycle (AI & Sustainability): The proliferation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) poses substantial environmental challenges, including escalating energy consumption, water usage, and material extraction, which strain vulnerable planetary systems. This work examines how the development and deployment of GenAI can be aligned with environmental sustainability objectives.
20,000 Kilometers of Code: AI’s Secret Voyage Across the Ocean (AI & Water Resources): As pressure mounts to reduce maritime shipping’s environmental footprint, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative ally. This report follows a virtual 20,000-kilometer voyage from Shanghai to Santos to explore how AI is being deployed on land, at sea, and in port communities to cut emissions, enhance safety, and protect marine biodiversity.
EXCLAIM Symposium: Is AI the Future of Weather and Climate Modeling? (AI & Climate Science & Research): AI is clearly becoming increasingly essential, but not standalone in advancing weather and climate modelling. Watch the recordings of the entire EXCLAIM Symposium!
Why Invest in Climate Change Startups? (AI & Climate Policy): “I’d really seen an industry come out of nowhere, right at the beginning in terms of the internet gaming industry, and that’s where climate tech is today” – We talk to Matthew Jellicoe of OnePlanetCapital about investing in early-stage climate tech funds.
Sustainability - Doing Well While Doing Good (AI & Sustainability): AI, data centers, devices, platforms… Our digital footprint is growing fast. But at what cost?
Xworks AI (AI & Circular Economy): We help SMEs, collectors, recyclers, remanufactures, logistics and traders of the waste and recycling industry to move sustainably.with AI-powered digital tools for the circular economy, stay complaint with the new regulatory landscape and access to global markets.
Clear Current (AI & Energy): Clear Current AI is building the nerve center for energy. By leveraging AI, Clear Current brings transparency to the energy costs and portfolio management of any large energy load customer, allowing them to better predict, audit, and procure power.
IREN (AI & Data Centers/Hardware): IREN is a leading next-generation data center business, powering the future of Bitcoin, AI and beyond utilizing 100% renewable energy.
FutureGuessr (AI & Climate & Extreme Weather): An immersive game to visualize the impacts of climate change on our planet.
Energy and AI Observatory (AI & Energy): The IEA’s Energy and AI Observatory provides up-to-date data and analysis on the growing links between the energy sector and artificial intelligence (AI). The new and fast-moving field of AI requires a new approach to gathering data and information, and the Observatory aims to provide regularly updated data and a comprehensive view of the implications of AI on energy demand.
Environmental Transparency Explorer Tool (AI & Sustainability): Explore the data from the paper 'Misinformation by Omission: The Need for More Environmental Transparency in AI' published by the all-star team at Hugging Face.
GovAI Winter Fellowship (London, UK): Seasonal Fellows join GovAI to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, with mentorship from leading experts in the field for the winter time. 🗓️Deadline: July 13, 2025.
Social Shifters Global Innovation Challenge (Global): Young leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs everywhere are rising up to take action on the social and environmental issues that matter to them most.
